Executive summary 

The 2026 Arts and Culture Monitor reveals a strong and enduring public appetite for arts and cultural participation in Western Australia, despite growing accessibility and affordability pressures. Community support for government investment remains exceptionally high.

Community supports more investment by the WA Government in arts and culture

  • 82% of respondents agreed that the WA Government should invest in arts and culture to ensure activities are available to the public.
  • 55% of respondents thought the Western Australian Government’s allocation of $2.47 per person per week for arts and cultural activities, services and facilities in WA was too low, while 36% thought it was about right. Only 9% of respondents thought it was too high.

Arts and culture are an important part of childhood and child development

  • 92% of respondents agreed that it is important for children and young people to have access to arts, cultural and creative activities as part of their education, and 90% of respondents agreed that it is important for children and young people to have access to arts, cultural and creative activities outside of school.

Arts, culture and creativity have a valuable role in people’s lives

  • When respondents were asked to rate the value of arts, culture and creativity in their own life, 59% of respondents gave a high rating of 4 or 5 out of 5. Only 3% of respondents said arts, culture and creativity provided no value at all.
  • Personal value dropped to 68 index points after reaching a 10-year high of 70 index points in 2025.

Arts, cultural and creative activities contribute to community health and wellbeing:

  • 83% of respondents agreed that arts and culture make them feel good.
  • 81% of respondents agreed that attending or participating in arts, cultural and creative activities and events has a positive impact on their mental health.
  • 73% of respondents agreed that attending or participating in arts, cultural and creative activities improves their sense of belonging and connection with others.
  • 81% of respondents agreed that attending or participating in arts, cultural and creative activities improves understanding and respect for different cultures and perspectives.
  • In recognition of the valuable role that arts and culture plays in people’s lives, 31% of respondents gave back to the arts, cultural and creative sector over the past 12 months, mostly by donating money or volunteering.
