WA Screen Industry Strategy

The Western Australian Screen Industry Strategy coordinates and guides the activities of the WA Government in supporting the growth of Western Australia's screen industry.

The vision:

Western Australia has a world-renowned screen industry showcasing exceptional creative content and stories to the world. Government and industry align to create new highly skilled jobs, attract investment and activity to grow and diversify our economy, and enrich our cultures and our people.

The WA Screen Industry Strategy aims to grow the economic and cultural benefits from the industry and align it with the State’s economic development framework, Diversify WA.

The strategy is supporting attraction of larger scale productions to the State, making WA a place where high-quality international productions are made, and where WA stories are created to be shared with the world.

The strategy is also supporting growth of the WA screen industry, supporting local creative content, creating jobs, and increasing investment and tourism opportunities in the State.

The WA Screen Industry Strategy outlines 4 strategic pillars and 8 initiatives to expand the Western Australian screen industry, provide increased creative employment, increase opportunities for external investment, and greater economic diversification for the State.

The strategy has supported the delivery of Perth Film Studios — the WA Government's $233.5 million state-of-the-art screen production facility – and $20 million for the WA Screen Production Attraction Incentive Fund as part of those initiatives.

Development of the strategy

The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) led the development of the WA Screen Industry Strategy with a cross-agency working group comprising:

  • Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries
  • Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation
  • Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development
  • Department of Training and Workforce Development
  • Tourism Western Australia
  • Department of Treasury
  • Screenwest.

Industry consultation was also undertaken through a key industry association roundtable and targeted consultation as well as feedback on the draft strategy through a broad cross-section of sector representatives.

Implementation of the strategy

An industry development team led by CITS is guiding the implementation of the WA Screen Industry Strategy.

Recognising WA’s exceptional talent and future potential, one of the 4 pillars in the strategy is Workforce which focuses on building capacity and capability in WA’s screen industry.

The WA Government has now released the WA Screen Industry Workforce Strategy 2024-2034 which focuses on growing WA’s screen industry by encouraging the development of a skilled and available workforce.

The Strategy focuses on skills development, expanding career pathways, and creating employment growth through training and migration strategies.
