For 20 years, Jan McGlinn OAM has helped Peel seniors stay active, connected and engaged through her volunteer leadership with the Seniors Recreation Council of WA (SRCWA) Peel Branch. This contribution has set lasting opportunities for seniors to improve their health, wellbeing and social connections.
After retiring as Coordinator of the Mandurah City Senior Citizens Centre, Jan returned to community service as a volunteer with SRCWA Peel. She went on to serve as branch president for 19 years and as a member of the SRCWA State Board.
During her time with the branch, Jan helped establish and grow programs that support healthy ageing, physical activity and social connection, from walking groups, fall prevention programs to yoga.
"I wish to thank everyone that has supported me and the work carried out under SRCWA Peel while with the Branch,” Ms McGlinn said.
"I am very pleased that the current committee will continue to support those same seniors programs.”
Acting Peel Branch President Robyn Ackroyd said Jan's leadership has shaped many of the services available to seniors in the Peel region today.
"Jan has dedicated herself for 20 years to serving the senior community in the Peel region through management and delivery of a range of SRCWA programs,” Ms Ackroyd said.
"She understood the need for preventative programs for seniors and, if she saw gaps in the services being offered through private or government agencies, she would find a way for our branch to fill that gap."
This commitment to improving the wellbeing of seniors was recognised in 2020 when Jan received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to seniors through wellbeing programs.
The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport, supports SRCWA create opportunities for seniors to participate in recreation, build social connections and maintain their wellbeing.
