The Combat Sports Commission (CSC) has released its Body Mass Management Guidelines, promoting a safe, healthy and evidence-based approach to weight management in combat sports.

The guidelines seek to lower risks associated with rapid weight loss and encourage contestants, trainers and industry participants to adopt long-term management practices, rather than excessive weight-cutting in the lead up to a contest.

CSC Chair, the Hon Bob Kucera AM APM JP said the guidelines align to the Commission's ongoing commitment to participant safety and welfare.

"Safe and effective body mass management is vital when it comes to protecting the health and wellbeing of combat sports contestants," Mr Kucera said.

"The guidelines are a resource for athletes and support personnel to take a considered, long-term approach to weight management and weight class selection.

“We see this as an important step towards reducing the need for rapid weight loss practices."

The guidelines also promote nutrition, hydration and gradual weight management strategies that support athlete safety, improved performance and fair competition.

The CSC encourages all combat sports participants to take in the new guidelines and incorporate best-practice body mass management approaches into training and competition preparation.
