Creativity took centre stage at WA Museum Boola Bardip last Thursday, where more than 150 teachers, artists and creative professionals gathered for the 2026 Creative Learning Showcase. 

It was an event packed with curious minds, great conversations and of course plenty of fun.  

Across the day there were many practical examples that both teachers and artists could use in their own practice, from a creative framework presented by Helpmann Award-winning theatre director Frank Newman to the intergenerational transfer of knowledge that proud Gunai woman and award-winning multidisciplinary artist Kirli Saunders OAM spoke so beautifully about. 

Over lunch year 6 students from Springfield Primary School took to the stage to share the outcomes of their residency project funded through the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sports’ Creative Learning Program.  

After spending 10 weeks learning to DJ with creative practitioner Miss Tash from CTRL DJ School these young musicians raised the roof of Hacket Hall with their tunes!

Key takeaways from the day included how we could understand the energy of learning and engagement (when to amplify and when to decrease), how creative learning is an investment in children’s imagination, our collective responsibility to share knowledge, the importance of reflection and how this is a valuable tool to grow learning.  

Most importantly the day was a reminder for teachers and artists that if we are asking students and young people to take risks, we need to be willing to do the same!
