A total of $155,828 in WA Government funding has delivered the installation of four new floodlights, significantly improving visibility at the oval and bringing lighting levels in line with standards required for grassroots training and competition. The Cottesloe Junior Football club funded the remainder of the project.
Previously, the existing lighting at Cottesloe Oval meant that clubs had limited ability to safely host evening training or games, with the lighting not meeting the minimum standards.
These upgrades will provide a safer training environment for players and coaches, particularly in a contact sport such as AFL where strong visibility is essential to minimise risk and support skill development.
The project will also give local teams greater flexibility to train later into the evening, recognising that many volunteer coaches and grassroots sporting teams are only able to begin sessions after-work commitments.
Importantly, the improved lighting opens the door for clubs to host evening games, creating a vibrant local community hub for players, families and supporters, including growing women’s and girls’ teams.
This project forms part of the WA Government’s PlayOn WA initiative, which is guiding investment in community sport and recreation infrastructure across the State through to 2030.
