National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise the vital contribution volunteers make across Western Australia.

The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport (CITS) works closely with sectors that rely on the generosity, skills and community spirit of volunteers.

Around 1.5 million Western Australians volunteer their time each year, contributing an estimated 398.7 million hours. From local sporting clubs and arts organisations to multicultural groups, festivals and language schools, volunteers help create inclusive and enriching experiences for people across the State.

CITS supports initiatives that help volunteers thrive and be recognised. The WA Local Sporting Stars Volunteer Recognition Program celebrates the contribution of volunteers in community sport and encourages nominations from across Western Australia.

Every fortnight, 2 volunteers are recognised with a $400 voucher and are considered for the Local Sporting Star of the Year award.

Volunteering also supports the preservation and sharing of Western Australia’s history and stories. At the State Records Office, volunteers such as Lana Badenko, David Jones and David Whiteford contribute their time and expertise to support access to the State’s archival collections.

Ms Badenko said volunteering provides an opportunity to give back and stay connected to her profession and community.

‘After a long career in library and records management, I wanted to give back to the community,’ Ms Badenko said.

‘There’s a great sense of accomplishment and I get to work with wonderful people at the State Records Office.’

People volunteer for many different reasons, but a common theme is the desire to contribute to something meaningful.

If you are interested in volunteering, Volunteering WA can connect you with opportunities across the State.
