CITS Director General Chad Anderson said that promoting gender equality and respect across Western Australia’s tourism, sport, recreation, creative and cultural sectors was vital to creating safer communities by encouraging a positive shift in behaviour and attitudes.

“Violence against women has no place in our community and through collaboration and education, we can contribute to creating safer and more respectful environments for everyone.

“Our sectors and groups are a key part of our community, and they play such an important role in influencing respectful behaviour and promoting change,” he said.

“CITS is continuing its investment to strengthen outcomes for women in Western Australia, including initiatives that promote gender equality and respect, guided by our Gender Diversity Advisory Group.

“This includes setting targets for sport and recreation organisations to have more women in leadership roles, supporting creative industry bodies and cultural spaces focused on inclusive and respectful engagement, and developing dedicated facilities for women and girls to encourage greater female participation.

“The issues of domestic violence, coercive control and emotional and psychological abuse are also explored in our creative industries including recent exhibitions such as Feminine Fragility: Art as Quiet Resistance, contributions to the Hatched: National Graduate Show 2025 at PICA, and in theatre such as Shadow of a Doubt presented by Fine Comb Theatre Company.

“These works reflect the lived realities of many individuals who have experienced abuse and invite audiences to experience the complexity and subtlety of personal trauma within a relationship.

“Our ongoing commitment in this space will be highlighted during this year’s 16 Days in WA campaign, when staff have been encouraged to visually demonstrate their support by wearing orange and a campaign badge to spark conversations about the prevention of violence against women.

“We are also encouraging stakeholders across the State to participate in registered events and show their support for this very important cause.”

The 2025 campaign theme is Stopping Family and Domestic Violence: Play your part.
