Ben Popham first dipped his toes into the world of swimming, not with dreams of gold medals, but to simply have fun.

Fast forward to the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 and he was standing on the podium, proudly representing Australia with a gold medal around his neck.

For a kid navigating the challenges of cerebral palsy, swimming became a sanctuary and a springboard.

Ben’s first strokes were taken at Superfins, a swim club that offered more than just pool time.

“It was great to be involved with more people that understood me,” he said.

“It gave me that sense of community and helped me realise that I didn’t have to struggle with my disability alone.”

As Ben’s talent began to surface in his early teens, so did the costs.

Coaching fees, pool entry, travel to competitions all adding up faster than a stopwatch.

That’s when a KidSport voucher made its splash.

KidSport is a WA Government initiative that helps children aged 5 to18 listed on a valid Western Australian concession card to participate in sport and recreation by providing financial assistance towards club fees.

It’s designed to break down barriers and ensure every child has the chance to play, grow and thrive, regardless of their circumstances.

Between 2012 and 2016, Ben received KidSport vouchers that helped cover the costs of club fees, making it easier for his ongoing participation in swimming.

“It was incredibly important,” Ben reflected.

“Young people need programs like KidSport to keep engaged in sport.

“For me, receiving grants and funding wasn’t just financial support, it was validation.

“When these programs believe in your potential, your dreams start to feel real and that belief can be the turning point.”

That turning point came in Tokyo, just a week before Ben’s 21st birthday.

After years of early mornings, endless laps and unwavering focus, he touched the wall first and realised he’d done it.

“I kept saying there was no chance I’d cry on the podium,” he laughed.

“But my teammate Col Pearce didn’t believe me for a second and he was right.”

Ben’s story is a ripple effect of support, determination and community spirit.
