The attending Ministers were briefed by a range of experts, including representatives from AUSTRAC, Racing Australia, Australian Jockeys Association, Racing and Wagering Western Australia, Perth Racing and TeleMedVET Health Services.
At the ARMC, it was acknowledged that safety in the industry is of paramount importance and the Ministers welcomed important initiatives in equine research and technological developments that support racing animal welfare and jockey safety. The Ministers also recognised the significant and long-standing role that racing plays across Australia and New Zealand in boosting local economies, driving tourism and providing social and community benefits, particularly in regional areas.
The Ministers agreed to write to the Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship regarding the Core Skills Occupation List and visa pathways to support the Australian racing industry to continue to develop and retain a skilled workforce.
The Ministers acknowledged the concerns of the Australian Jockeys’ Association in relation to the review of safety standards for jockey helmets and vests, and agreed to call on Racing Australia to reconvene the Jockey and industry Participant WHS Committee to address the Association’s concerns.
Following the conclusion of the ARMC, the Ministers were pleased to attend the showcase racing event, the Broome Cup, which was held on 16 August 2025 at the picturesque Broome Racecourse near the renowned destination of Cable Beach in Western Australia.
