The promotional campaign to be launched next week by the WA Government and the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) raises awareness of the nomination process and promotes the benefits of increased diversity in local government representation.
The ‘You are the right material’ campaign encourages more diversity in nominations, including people from different ethnic backgrounds, ages, professions and gender to consider standing for council.
The campaign reminds people that local government is a vital level of democracy and councils provide important services that community members and businesses rely on every day.
Elected members have a range of responsibilities and are able to make positive changes for their community and residents in their local area.
To nominate in a local government election, the candidate must be an Australian citizen over 18-years-of-age, be a resident, property owner or occupier in their district, and have completed the mandatory local government candidate induction.
Nominations for candidates open on 28 August and close at 4pm on 4 September 2025.
The second phase of the campaign will encourage people to have their say by voting in local government elections, which will be held on Saturday 18 October 2025.
