She struggled with confidence both on and off the court. Despite her former lack of confidence, the 19-year-old was never far from the court. She earned her place in the WA state team, travelled to nationals and debuted for the Southwest Slammers at the age of 14.

As the youngest of five in a basketball loving family, a place in the key was always going to be the way.

“My whole family played basketball, so I pretty much grew up in a basketball stadium being the youngest,” she said.

“Sport is a great way to be a part of a community and not feel alone. I've met some of my closest friends through the game.”

Mia credits Basketball WA’s EmpowerHer program with her new outlook and a boost in confidence. Funded through the WA Government, the program is an avenue for girls to become confident female leaders who excel on and off the court.

EmpowerHer connects young female players with each other while helping them strengthen their mindset through the sport they love.

By supporting a new generation of leaders, such as Mia, the impact ripples through the sport. Confidence on the court increases participation rates. And, with confidence the girls are ready to step into coaching and mentoring opportunities.

The EmpowerHer program’s mentoring sessions and mindset workshops help to enrich the athletes. Complementing the online activities, trainings and a team building session with the Perth Lynx rounded out the program experience.

“I've never seen anything like this program before,” Ms Anderson said.

“I was the shy kid that stayed towards the back, now I feel like a leader. I’m no longer afraid to speak up. I can be that person that teammates, and coaches can rely on.

“The mentors involved in the program were real role models and great examples of leaders in women’s sport.”

Mia’s turned her words into actions, and she has recently set up her own basketball program in the South West called Hoop Her Way.
